Do Copilot prompts have a word/character limit?
Copilot prompts are limited by the underlying AI model and subscription tier, but keeping the main prompt under 4,000 characters is a good practice. Copilot can summarize Word documents that are much longer (up to 80,000 words) but the main prompt should be shorter or broken up into steps.
Can I trust output from Copilot and how reliable are its suggestions?
All large language model AI tools can provide inaccurate information on occasion, so you should proofread output from Copilot and edit as necessary. For technical documentation or industry-specific content, consider adding your own knowledge and experience in the writing. You can always provide Copilot source documents to use as reference.
How is my data used by Copilot and how secure is it?
Copilot does not use your prompts or processed data to train any AI models. The data remains within the Microsoft 365 service boundary as your Copilot activity history. All Copilot interaction data is encrypted, and if your organization uses Microsoft Purview, you can control how long Copilot keeps the data.
Who owns the copyright of the text generated by Copilot?
Microsoft doesn’t claim copyright ownership or determine which user owns copyright to a certain piece of content, since Copilot can create similar content for similar prompts. Also, Microsoft has included guardrails and filters in Copilot to ensure that it is unlikely to produce content that infringes on someone else’s copyright.
